Worm gear calculator: centre distance, module, efficiency, thermal check

Enter wheel torque, ratio, wheel speed and life — the calculator chooses the rim material, centre distance, module, worm and wheel geometry, efficiency, checks contact and bending strength and oil temperature.

Archimedean steel worm. Material groups: I — tin bronzes (vs > 5 m/s), II — tin-free bronzes and brasses (2…5 m/s), III — grey cast iron (< 2 m/s). Kt = 9…17 W/(m²·°C) without a fan.

Worm gear design

Material by sliding speed; aw = 61·∛(T2·10³/[σ]H²); z1 by ratio, m and q standard, x within ±1; η = tg γ/tg(γ + φ); σH = 340·√(Ft2·K/(d1·d2)); σF = 0.7·YF2·Ft2·K/(b2·m); oil temperature t = 20 + P1(1 − η)/(Kt·A) ≤ 80…95 °C.

FAQ

What is the efficiency of a worm gear?
About 0.7…0.75 for one start, 0.75…0.85 for two, 0.85…0.9 for four.
What is a worm wheel made of?
Bronze rim (tin bronze at high sliding speeds) or cast iron at low speeds; steel worm.
Why a thermal check?
Friction losses heat the oil; above 80…95 °C it degrades and the gear may seize.
How many worm starts?
z1 = 4 for u = 8…14, 2 for 14…30, 1 for u > 30.
What is the worm diameter factor q?
d1 = q·m; standard values 8, 10, 12.5, 16, 20.
