Limits and fits calculator (ISO 286)

Enter a size and a fit, e.g. Ø50 H7/f7, or a single class such as 25 k6. The calculator finds the limit deviations from the ISO 286 tables, limit sizes, maximum and minimum clearance or interference, the fit type and system, and draws the tolerance zone diagram.

Examples: Ø50 H7/f7, 40 H7/k6, 25 k6, 120 F8/h6, 12.5 JS7. Capital letter — hole, small letter — shaft. Sizes 1 to 500 mm.

Limits and fits

A tolerance class is a letter (the fundamental deviation, i.e. the position of the zone) and a number (the IT grade, i.e. the size of the zone). Capital letters are holes, small letters shafts (ISO 286).

Deviations

  • a…h shafts lie below the zero line (upper deviation es; h: es = 0);
  • js is symmetric, ±IT/2;
  • j…zc lie above (lower deviation ei).

Holes mirror shafts: EI = −es for A…H, and the special rule ES = −ei + Δ for K…N up to IT8 and P…ZC up to IT7.

Fits

max clearance = ES − ei, min clearance = EI − es (negative means interference). Fit tolerance = hole tolerance + shaft tolerance.

Example: Ø40 H7/k6

H7: 0 / +25 µm; k6: +2 / +18 µm. Maximum clearance 23 µm, maximum interference 18 µm — a transition fit, hole-basis.

FAQ

What are the deviations of H7?
Lower deviation 0, upper +IT7: for Ø50 mm that is 0 / +25 µm.
What kind of fit is H7/f7?
A clearance fit, hole-basis; for Ø50 the clearance is 25 to 75 µm. Used for plain bearings and running parts.
Transition versus interference fit?
In a transition fit (H7/k6) the zones overlap, so either a small clearance or interference results; in an interference fit (H7/p6) the shaft is always larger than the hole.
What is an IT grade?
The tolerance grade: the smaller the number, the tighter the tolerance. Shafts are usually one grade finer than holes.
How is a fit written on a drawing?
As Ø40 H7/k6 on an assembly drawing; on part drawings as Ø40 H7(+0.025) and Ø40 k6(+0.018/+0.002).
