Uniformly accelerated motion calculator: s, v, a, t and the graphs x(t), v(t), a (t)
Enter any three of the five quantities: displacement s, initial velocity v₀, final velocity v, acceleration a and time t. The calculator finds the other two, shows the solution Given, SI, Solution, Answer and plots x(t), v(t) and a(t).
FAQ
Which equations are needed for uniformly accelerated motion and which quantities must be known?
v = v₀ + at, s = v₀ t + at²/2, s = (v₀ + v)t/2 and v² - v₀² = 2as. There are five quantities (s, v₀, v, a, t) and two independent equations, so any three are enough; the calculator handles all ten combinations.
How to find the acceleration from the initial and final velocity and the distance?
a = (v² - v₀²) / (2s). For braking from 20 m/s to a stop over 40 m: a = (0 - 400) / 80 = -5 m/s² and the braking time is t = 2s/(v₀ + v) = 4 s.
Why are there sometimes two answers?
A body that first moves one way, slows down and comes back passes the same point twice: going up and going down. The velocities there differ in sign and the moments differ. Roots with a negative time are dropped as unphysical.
How to find the braking distance of a car?
a
What is the difference between displacement and distance, and what does a negative acceleration mean?
The displacement is a vector from the start point to the end point; the distance is the length of the whole path. The sign of the acceleration depends on the axis: a negative acceleration with a positive velocity is braking; with a negative velocity it is speeding up in the opposite direction.
