Roller chain drive calculator: pitch, sprocket teeth, chain length

Enter driving sprocket power and speed, the ratio and operating conditions — the calculator selects a roller chain, teeth numbers, chain length and centre distance and checks hinge pressure and safety factor.

Single-strand roller chains. Centre distance a = (30…50)p.

FAQ

How is a drive chain selected?
Find the pitch from hinge wear, take a standard chain and check hinge pressure and safety factor.
Why an odd number of sprocket teeth?
With odd z1 and an even number of links, wear is more uniform.
How is chain length found?
In links: lp = 2a/p + (z1 + z2)/2 + ((z2 − z1)/2π)²·p/a, rounded to even.
What if hinge pressure is too high?
Use a larger pitch, a double-strand chain or more teeth.
Which centre distance?
Usually a = (30…50)p.
