A cylinder is a solid bounded by a cylindrical surface and two parallel planes crossing it.
Formula
The volume of a cylinder is V = π * R2 * H, where π = 3.141592, R is the base radius and H the height.
Example
A barrel with radius 0.3 m and height 0.9 m: V = 3.141592 × 0.3² × 0.9 ≈ 0.2545 m³ ≈ 254.5 L. A round pool 5 m across with water 1.2 m deep: V = π × 2.5² × 1.2 ≈ 23.56 m³.
Units
The volume comes out in cubic units of the dimensions you enter: centimetres give cm³, metres give m³. Use the same unit for all dimensions. Conversion: 1 L = 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³, 1 m³ = 1000 L, 1 mL = 1 cm³.
Good to know
- You usually measure the diameter — halve it.
- The volume of water in a pipe is a cylinder with the inner radius and the pipe length.
Where it is used
- Barrels, tanks, cisterns, frame pools, mugs and cans.
- Concrete for piles and columns, well, pipeline and heating system volume.
- Engine displacement, packaging, filament for 3D printing.
How to use
Enter the dimensions (decimals with a dot or comma) and press “Calculate”. You get the formula with your numbers and the result with a copy button, and the 3D model is redrawn to your dimensions.
