Parallelepiped volume

A parallelepiped is a polyhedron with six faces, each of them a parallelogram.
A rectangular parallelepiped (cuboid) has all faces rectangular.

Formula

The volume of a cuboid is length × width × height ⇒ V = a * b * c

Example

An aquarium 100 × 40 × 50 cm: V = 100 × 40 × 50 = 200,000 cm³ = 200 L. A foundation slab 6 × 4 × 0.3 m: V = 7.2 m³ of concrete.

Units

The volume comes out in cubic units of the dimensions you enter: centimetres give cm³, metres give m³. Use the same unit for all dimensions. Conversion: 1 L = 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³, 1 m³ = 1000 L, 1 mL = 1 cm³.

Good to know

  • The actual water volume of an aquarium is smaller because of glass thickness, substrate and the gap at the top — usually by 10–15%.
  • Order 3–5% extra concrete for shrinkage and losses.
  • For an oblique parallelepiped use the height, not the side edge: V = Sbase × H.

Where it is used

  • Aquariums, pools, tanks.
  • Concrete for foundations, slabs and screeds; soil for an excavation.
  • Boxes, containers, cargo and truck body volume, room volume for ventilation and air conditioning.

How to use

Enter the dimensions (decimals with a dot or comma) and press “Calculate”. You get the formula with your numbers and the result with a copy button, and the 3D model is redrawn to your dimensions.
