V-belt drive calculator: section, pulleys, belt length, number of belts

Enter driving pulley power and speed and the ratio — the calculator selects the section, pulleys, belt length and centre distance, number of belts, pre-tension and shaft load.

Classical sections Z, A, B. The section is chosen by the driving torque, d1 one size above the minimum. Reduce Cp by 0.1 for two shifts and by 0.2 for three.

V-belt drive design

Section by torque; d2 = d1·u·(1 − ε); a ≥ 0.55(d1 + d2) + h; length l = 2a + π(d1 + d2)/2 + (d2 − d1)²/(4a) → standard; α1 = 180° − 57°(d2 − d1)/a ≥ 120°; z = P/[P], [P] = [P0]·Cp·Cα·Cl·Cz; F0 = 850·P·Cl/(z·v·Cα·Cp); shaft load 2F0·z·sin(α1/2).

FAQ

How is a V-belt section chosen?
By a nomogram or by driving torque: Z up to 30 N·m, A 15…60, B 50…150 N·m.
How is belt length found?
l = 2a + π(d1 + d2)/2 + (d2 − d1)²/(4a), rounded to standard, then a is recalculated.
What wrap angle is needed?
At least 120° on the small pulley.
How many belts?
z = P/[P] rounded up, preferably not more than 5–6.
What is the shaft load?
F = 2F0·z·sin(α1/2).
